Angela Okorie Held in Suleja Over Alleged Cybercrime Linked to Mercy Johnson

Nollywood actress Angela Okorie has been remanded at the Suleja Correctional Centre, Niger State, following her arraignment before a court over alleged cyber-related offences.

Okorie was arrested on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in Lagos State by operatives of the Lagos State Criminal Investigation Department (CID). She was later transferred to the custody of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) in Abuja, where she was charged in court on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the arrest to TheCable Lifestyle, stating that the matter was being handled by the national cybercrime unit. However, the police have not released official details of the specific charges filed against the actress.

Filmmaker Ajemba Stanley confirmed that Okorie was arraigned and remanded by the court. In a series of social media posts, he criticised the handling of the case, calling it excessive.

“You arrested Angela Okorie at midnight, flew her to Abuja by 6am, and took her to court the same morning, where she was remanded in Suleja prison,” Stanley wrote. “If anyone feels defamed, the right thing is to go to court, not to use the police to oppress Nigerians.”

Stanley said he would travel to Abuja to follow up on the case and called on authorities to allow due legal process.

Although the police have not officially linked the case to any individual, industry sources say the charges may be connected to Okorie’s public dispute with fellow Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson.

The dispute gained prominence in 2026, when Okorie made a series of social media posts about Johnson, including comments about her health and accusations of hypocrisy. Johnson responded briefly with a social media post condemning online attacks, then withdrew from the public exchange.

In a new development, actress Doris Ogala appealed publicly to Mercy Johnson to forgive Okorie. Ogala, who had earlier expressed approval of Okorie’s arrest, said she did not expect the matter to escalate to imprisonment.

“Mercy, I know Angela really hurt you. She hurt me too,” Ogala wrote. “I did not know it would lead to prison. Please forgive her. I beg you.”

As of the time of filing this report, Angela Okorie remains in custody at the Suleja Correctional Centre, while further court proceedings are expected.
