Buhweju County’s former Member of Parliament, Francis Mwijukye, made his first notable public appearance on Tuesday since losing his parliamentary seat, appearing alongside his wife to take part in local government elections in Rwengwe Sub-county.
The opposition politician and his spouse cast their ballots at the Bwoga Catholic Church polling station during elections for the LC3 chairperson and local councillors in Rwengwe Sub-county. The outing marked Mwijukye’s first visible public engagement following his defeat in the recently concluded parliamentary elections.
Taking to social media platform X, Mwijukye highlighted the importance of civic duty and respect for the democratic process.
“My wife and I have just joined our people to vote for the LC3 Chairperson and councillors of Rwengwe Sub-county at Bwoga Catholic Church polling station. May the will of the people prevail!” he wrote.
A close ally of veteran opposition leader Kizza Besigye, Mwijukye has largely kept a low profile since the January polls that ended his tenure as Buhweju MP. His appearance at the polling station has been widely interpreted as a signal of his continued commitment to grassroots politics, despite the recent electoral setback.

Local residents welcomed the lawmaker’s presence, with some viewing it as an affirmation of democratic values and peaceful participation in local governance processes.
