The 16-year-old Zimbabwean schoolboy who appeared in a viral explicit video with his 33-year-old mathematics teacher, Zvikomborero Maria Makedenge, has returned to school to a hero’s welcome.

The teenager personally posted a video of his arrival on his social media accounts, accompanied by a message of gratitude: “I appreciate the love and support that comes from you guys.”

Dressed in his school uniform and a sweater, with an earring in his left ear, the smiling teen walked confidently onto the school premises. As soon as he stepped through the gate, dozens of classmates – boys and girls alike – rushed out of their classrooms screaming with excitement to greet him. They took turns hugging him tightly before gathering around for a memorable group photo.

The footage, recorded by someone accompanying him, captures an atmosphere of celebration rarely seen in a Zimbabwean school.

To recap: a few weeks ago, the country was shaken by the leak of an explicit video showing the minor engaged in sexual activity with Zvikomborero Maria Makedenge, his former mathematics teacher. The woman, who has since relocated to the United States, was visiting her boyfriend – a tenant in the boy’s family home in the Glen View suburb of Harare – when the incident occurred.

According to court documents, the incident took place on August 2. The teacher allegedly entered the teenager’s bedroom and engaged in sexual relations with him. The boy later told investigators he was coerced by the woman, who reportedly promised to help him move to the United States if he kept quiet.

Many internet users, however, have questioned the claim of coercion, pointing to what appears to be the boy’s enthusiastic participation in the video.

Regardless of the exact circumstances, Zimbabwean law is unambiguous: the age of consent is 18. Any sexual activity with a person under 18 is illegal, even if the minor appears to consent.

The investigation continues, and the former teacher remains wanted by authorities despite having left the country.

As for the teenager, he has returned to school amid cheers and hugs from his peers, turning an involuntary scandal into an unexpected moment of collective support and celebrity.
