Baltasar Ebang Engonga Reportedly Released as Viral Equatorial Guinea Scandal Returns to Spotlight

Controversial Equatorial Guinean figure Baltasar Ebang Engonga, popularly known online as “Egonga,” is once again dominating conversations across Africa after reports emerged claiming he has regained his freedom following an alleged prison term.

News of his reported release spread rapidly on Tuesday, May 19, after several blogs and X accounts claimed the former government official had walked out of prison after spending nearly two years behind bars.

One viral post shared by Nigeria Stories described Egonga as a “controversial celebrity,” saying his reported freedom had immediately reignited intense debates online.

From Powerful Government Official to Viral Internet Figure

Baltasar Ebang Engonga was once considered one of the influential figures within Equatorial Guinea’s government. He previously served as the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), the institution responsible for investigating financial crimes in the oil-rich Central African nation.

His downfall began in 2024 when authorities launched investigations into alleged embezzlement of public funds. However, the case quickly exploded into an international scandal after hundreds of explicit videos allegedly linked to him surfaced online.

The leaked videos sparked outrage, jokes, memes and endless discussions across social media platforms including Facebook, Telegram, TikTok and X.

Reports at the time claimed that some of the videos involved wives and relatives of influential figures, making the scandal even more explosive and politically sensitive.

Government Crackdown and Public Condemnation

At the peak of the controversy, the Equatorial Guinea government moved swiftly to suspend officials reportedly connected to the scandal while tightening measures inside public institutions.

Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue publicly condemned inappropriate conduct within government offices as the country faced growing international embarrassment.

The scandal quickly became one of the most talked-about stories in Africa, turning Egonga into an unlikely internet celebrity despite the serious allegations surrounding him.

Across several African countries, his name became widely recognized online, with social media users continuously creating memes and debating the controversy long after it first broke.

Conflicting Reports Surrounding His Sentence

Despite widespread coverage of the case, uncertainty still surrounds the exact details of Egonga’s imprisonment and legal situation.

Over time, different media outlets published conflicting information regarding his sentence. Some reports claimed prosecutors were seeking an 18-year prison sentence over corruption and abuse of office allegations, while others later stated he had been sentenced to eight years in jail.

Now, fresh claims suggesting he has already been released have only added more mystery to the already controversial story.

As of Tuesday evening, authorities in Equatorial Guinea had not released an official public statement confirming or clarifying the viral reports about his alleged release.

Longstanding Criticism of Governance in Equatorial Guinea

The renewed attention surrounding Egonga also comes as Equatorial Guinea continues facing criticism from international human rights organizations over governance, transparency and political freedoms.

The country has been ruled for decades by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state.

Despite the controversies attached to his name, Egonga remains one of the most recognizable internet figures linked to recent African political scandals, with online reactions to his reported release continuing to flood social media through memes, jokes and heated discussions.
