Federal University Oye-Ekiti, FUOYE, has suspended two students over allegations of cyberbullying against the institution’s suspended Students’ Union Government, SUG, President, James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
The development was announced in a statement published on the university’s official news portal on Friday night. The statement was signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Tajudeen Opoola, who is currently serving as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
According to the university management, the affected students are Alao Iyanuoluwa Odunayo and Olawale Abiodun Samuel. They were accused of allegedly conspiring to cyberbully Adio by posting matters related to his private life online after he reportedly failed to meet their financial demands.
FUOYE Orders Immediate Suspension of Two Students
In the statement, FUOYE management said the suspension of the two students takes immediate effect while investigations into the matter continue.
The university noted that it frowned at the alleged involvement of the students in actions capable of damaging the image of the institution. It added that FUOYE remains determined to address any form of misconduct that could bring the university into disrepute.
The statement partly read that the management of Federal University Oye-Ekiti had suspended the two students with immediate effect for allegedly cyberbullying an embattled student union leader, James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
It further stated that Alao Iyanuoluwa Odunayo and Olawale Abiodun Samuel allegedly conspired to cyberbully Adio by posting his private affairs online over his inability to meet their financial demands.
Investigation Into Alleged Cyberbullying Continues
The university management emphasized that investigations into the allegations were still ongoing. However, it directed the two students to proceed on suspension immediately pending further action.
According to the statement, the institution is committed to purging itself of any behavior considered capable of denting the image of FUOYE.
The latest disciplinary action comes amid a wider controversy involving the suspended SUG President, James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
James Adio Previously Suspended Over Extortion Allegations
Adio was reportedly suspended by the university last week alongside the Deputy Director of Students Affairs over allegations bordering on extortion.
He was accused of having an indirect role in the alleged illegal collection of ?1,000 from first-year students for practical sessions. Reports also claimed that about ?700,000 was traced to his personal bank account.
Following his suspension, an explicit video allegedly involving him circulated widely on social media, drawing public attention and sparking reactions from students and online users.
The matter also reportedly attracted the intervention of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS.
FUOYE Yet to Announce Final Decision
As of the time of this report, FUOYE management has not announced the final outcome of the investigation into the cyberbullying allegations or the earlier extortion-related claims involving the suspended SUG President.
The university, however, maintained that it would continue to protect its reputation and enforce discipline within the institution.
The case has continued to generate discussions online, especially around student conduct, cyberbullying, privacy, and the handling of internal disciplinary matters in Nigerian universities.
For now, the two suspended students are expected to remain away from academic activities until the university concludes its investigation and communicates its final decision.
