Uju Anya I realised I was attracted to women 10 years into my marriage

In an interview on WithChude, Anya spoke candidly about her past marriage, her journey toward understanding her identity, and her new union with Sirry Alang. Contrary to long-standing rumors, she made it clear that her previous marriage was never a façade.

“My marriage was not fake”

Anya explained that she was genuinely in love with her ex-husband and described their relationship as both exciting and fulfilling. She stressed that their marriage was built on real emotions and deep connection.

“It was not a fake marriage. I was genuinely in love and excited, and the sex was fantastic,” she said.

However, after spending nearly a decade together, she began to fully understand her attraction to women. According to Anya, she approached this realization with honesty, and her former husband gave her permission to follow her truth.

Finding love again with Sirry Alang

Anya revealed that she later found love again with Sirry Alang, whom she lovingly describes as her “dream wife.” She emphasized that their relationship goes far beyond the idea of marriage alone.

“Ten years into the marriage, I realised I needed to be with women, and he gave me permission to go ahead. My wife, Dr Sirry Alang, my dream wife, my sweetheart — we did not just get married; we blended a family.”

The couple got engaged in March 2024 and married later the same year. Both women had previously been married to men and have children, making family unity a central part of their relationship.

Academic careers and public recognition

Anya is a lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States. She rose to public prominence in 2022 after a controversial tweet wishing the late Queen Elizabeth II “excruciating pain” went viral.

Sirry Alang, on the other hand, is a Cameroonian-American health services researcher. She is also an associate professor of Sociology and Health, Medicine and Society at Lehigh University.

A story of truth and acceptance

Through her testimony, Anya seeks to challenge misconceptions surrounding her personal life. She maintains that she experienced genuine love in her former marriage before finding deeper personal fulfillment and family harmony with Sirry Alang — a relationship rooted in honesty, acceptance, and mutual respect.
