Ghana: Who is Oteele and why is he trending?

Oteele, whose real name is Stephen Yaw Mawunyo, is a popular Ghanaian actor and comedian from the Kumawood film industry. He is also widely known by the nickname “Biggie” or “Biggie Boss Oteele” because of his large build.

Who is Oteele?

Oteele rose to fame through comic roles and skits in Twi-language movies produced mainly in Kumasi. He is one of the recognizable faces of Kumawood, the local film industry that focuses on stories told in the Akan language.

He has been married to Gifty Nana Afriyie since 2019, and the couple has several children. Beyond acting, Oteele has spoken publicly about his past health challenges and runs philanthropic activities, including a small orphanage that cares for about 30 children. He has also formed a dance group for some of the children under his care.

In interviews, he has discussed how acting helped him acquire property, including a house, a car, and land, and he has advised fellow actors on the importance of education.

Why is he trending?

As of August 12, 2026, Oteele’s name is circulating widely on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok. The trend stems from rumors of leaked intimate videos (locally referred to as “azigi” or “leaks”) allegedly involving the actor.

Many users are sharing or commenting on posts claiming that such videos are circulating, while others post links that often lead to unverified or dubious websites. Some posts suggest that Oteele’s son stated during a TikTok live that the circulating images are AI-generated (deepfakes). Neither the actor nor his family has issued an official public statement confirming or denying the claims at the time of writing.

No major Ghanaian news outlets have verified the existence of authentic intimate videos belonging to Oteele. The discussion remains largely confined to social media gossip and unverified posts.

Context

Leaked private videos involving public figures frequently spark online conversations in Ghana. However, the non-consensual distribution of intimate images is illegal under Ghanaian law, and authorities have previously warned against both creating and sharing such content.

At present, the claims surrounding Oteele appear to be unconfirmed rumors. The story continues to evolve on social media, but verified information from the actor or reliable media sources is still limited.
